On an abandoned Zamaron space station, a small group try to summon the New Gods to go up against Darkseid but what they get is Blackfire and the corpse of Green Lantern Jessica Cruz, whom Darkseid killed at the end of the previous issue. Venditti writes a good, fast paced issue with enough of a change in Hawkman to make you realise something’s off. In order to regain their shadows, Hawkman and the Shade have journeyed to the Shadowlands to face the Shadow Thief, but the Shade recognises that something has changed within Hawkman – he’s more vicious than he’s been in a long time. This sets things up and introduces her nice and quick, but it’s a bit lightweight. I enjoyed Leah Williams’s work on BARBARELLA/DEJAH THORIS so thought I’d give this mini-series a go even though I knew next to nothing about the character of Chastity Jack. Too late she realises the room’s drugged and the others fall asleep when the bad guys arrive, they manage to overcome her as well. And Golden Gail finds a surprising ally when she breaks out of the League’s cage.Īnother fine issue of this crossover – worth it for the interrogation scenes alone.Ĭhastity, fresh from hunting and killing some vampires, heads to an audition for a burlesque show where she finds a bunch of other actresses, all waiting for different auditions. Elsewhere in the Para-Zone, Colonel Weird and John Stewart view the final fate of the Flash. The League interrogate Abraham Slam and the others, while Batman and Cyborg work at getting out of the farm.

Nice to have this series back and being as fun and crazy as ever.īLACK HAMMER/JUSTICE LEAGUE: HAMMER OF JUSTICE #3 Sadie and her rag-tag crew – including Clark the Anti-Christ – have somehow muddled through before deciding to return to their childhood home where they meet someone we haven’t see for a while. It’s five years later and we get to see just what Satan’s made of the place since he brought his demonic horde through. Let’s see if we can get back into it, shall we? Justice League Odyssey is not an enjoyable book and is entirely skippable in the grand scheme of the DC Universe.With being on holiday for a couple of weeks and having to catch up with everything, Sunday Reviews have been a bit scarce for a while. But I feel like you, dear reader, deserve MY truth. It’s a writer I typically enjoy writing characters I have grown to love over the years, and in some cases decades. I wish I felt differently about this one. I don’t enjoy slamming a book as some reviewers do. That never felt like Jessica Cruz to begin with, so why should I worry? Even the surprise ending in which Darkseid slays a Power-Ring-drained Jessica Cruz, there is no sense of despair or mourning. These characters, manipulated by both plot and writer, feel hollow. Victor is so removed from humanity he may as well be Robot. Starfire lacks the emotional punch she was imbued with in the Wolfman-era. Azrael is stripped clean of his zealotry. Even a callback to Jessica Cruz’s crippling anxiety that left her isolated to her home rings hollow in the face of her being written with absolutely zero anxiety. Part of this feeling of apathy stems from, in my opinion, the gross mischaraterization of nearly every character involved.
The return of a major villain like Darkseid should have me excitedly turning pages but instead it feels begrudging month after month. Even in this issue, in which things actually did happen– Starfire and Azrael take their places alongside Cyborg as Darkseid’s New Gods– there is still the feeling of this series being an inevitable placeholder for something more… important.
Unfortunately, the book continues to falter in terms of writing. From galactic spreads to cult armies and “para-angels”, Conrad spares no expense in bringing this book to life. Another month and another issue of Justice League Odyssey. As usually, this book is visually stunning as Conrad continues to turn in exceptional work month after month.
